then you can make an intelligent decision as to which one you want

Ultra compacts like Canon's IXUS cameras, don't allow manual focus for still images OR video. A number of Canon's SX models and also their advanced compacts (e.g. S100, S110) allow manual focus of still images, but NO manual focus for video.
You need a dSLR camera if you need to manually focus video.

A video camera is the best choice, this movement to supplement still cameras as video cameras does not make sense. It is better to buy both a "still" camera and a "video" (camcorder) camera, if you want best results.
