Starting to have doubts on religion....?

My sister made me an interesting point the other day and the more I think about it....the more I'm starting to agree with her.

Ok so basically it's something like this. How does anyone know which God is real? I'm certain there is a God, the world has shown me that...but how do we know which one? Sure most religions have their holy book (eg, the Bible) but those books were written by men. And they written by after the events happened, sometimes hundreds of years after so how do we know that they even got the right story? When word is passed through people, people can tweak the story a little or may forget the exact words...so things in the bible must have changed a little. All those facts and everything...what if they are not facts? Yes there is proof that there was a man named Jesus and he came around and messed things up a little and was crucified, that much can be proven...but did he really raise from the dead? We only know from what someone wrote....how do we know it actually happened? And all those muslims who were so sure about mohammed....what if mohammed was wrong or lying? How do we know? How can I be sure I'm in the right religion? You could tell me to go by faith...but what about all the other religious people in the world from other religions? They have faith in their god too...how do I know they're not right and I am wrong? What if I've been following the wrong God all along? How can I know? How much does it matter if I've got the wrong God??

Update:

@Spencer: er....like when you're walking down the street early in the morning and you get this beautiful array of clouds and you just know, or when you are on your knees begging and begging for things to get better and somehow they do. There are specific experiences in my life where I have just felt "I know there's a God" , but I'm not really prepared to share those :P and also I've never really believed in evolution....I think there needs to be a God for the world to operate as it is...although if I'm wrong in the end it;s not like it really matters. I think it's better to believe in a God all your life to find out there is none at the end and die and fade to darkness or whatever happens than to believe there is no God all your life and die to find out you were wrong and go to Hell...the problem is, finding the RIGHT God...I dunno...no hate please >.<

That is where it becomes important for you, you personally, to do some research and prove to yourself what is true and what is not. You have free will and the right to choose what you believe so why not make it an informed faith by doing just that.

For me personally, I use to believe in a God but it was not based on knowledge. I also had a bible but had never read it. Perhaps I could define my views as believing what others told me. One day, a lady knocked at my door and during a conversation just happened to mention that Jesus was not born at Christmas time. Upon checking this fact I learned it was true. It made me completely reevaluate my life and what I had been told. After 18 years of study I can tell you one thing I have learned from all the writings I have read....not everything you are told is truth but The bible is the only book written by over 40 men that harmonises containing detailed prophesy, accurate history and some scientific facts well ahead of it's time. It is unique in this aspect from any other book.

    Some facts I have found....

Not only does the bible promote healthy living, good relationships and strong family ties, the bible also has shown to be advance medically when no other nation around them was. In his book The Bible and Modern Medicine, A. Rendle Short, M.D., pointed out that public sanitary law existed, if at all, only in elementary form among nations that surrounded ancient Israel, and stated: “It is the more surprising therefore that in a book like the Bible, alleged to be unscientific, there should be a sanitary code at all, and equally surprising that a nation just escaped from slavery, frequently overrun by enemies and carried away into captivity from time to time, should have on its statute books so wise and reasonable a code of rules of health. This has been recognized by good authorities, even those with no great interest in the religious aspect of the Bible.”—London, 1953, p. 37.

    Scientific support:

When the Bible was being written, there was speculation regarding how the earth was held in space. Some, for example, believed that the earth was supported by four elephants standing on a big sea turtle. Yet rather than reflect the fanciful, unscientific views existing at its time of writing, the Bible simply stated: “[God] is stretching out the north over the empty place, hanging the earth upon nothing.” (Job 26:7) Yes, over 3,000 years ago the Bible correctly noted that the earth has no visible support, a fact that is in harmony with the more recently understood laws of gravity and motion. Other scientific proofs are of the water cycle written hundreds of years ahead of it's time at Ecclesiastes 1:7. Further to that, evidence of the global flood so with good reason one of the greatest scientists of all time, Isaac Newton, said: “No sciences are better attested than the religion of the Bible

The science of mathematical probability also offers striking proof that the Genesis creation account must have come from a source with knowledge of the events. The account lists 10 major stages in this order: (1) a beginning; (2) a primitive earth in darkness and enshrouded in heavy gases and water; (3) light; (4) an expanse or atmosphere; (5) large areas of dry land; (6) land plants; (7) sun, moon and stars discernible in the expanse, and seasons beginning; (8) sea monsters and flying creatures; (9) wild and tame beasts, mammals; (10) man. Science agrees that these stages occurred in this order. What are the chances that the uneducated writer of Genesis just guessed this order? The same as if you picked at random the numbers 1 to 10 from a box, and drew them in consecutive order. The mathematical probability of doing this on your first try are 1 in 3,628,800! So, to say the writer just happened to list the foregoing events in the right order without getting the facts from somewhere is not realistic. However, evolutionary theory does not allow for a Creator who was there, knew the facts and could reveal them to humans. Instead, it attributes the appearance of life on earth to the spontaneous generation of living organisms from inanimate chemicals.

The Genesis creation account emerges as a scientifically sound document. It reveals the larger categories of plants and animals, with their many varieties, reproducing only “according to their kinds.” The fossil record provides confirmation of this. In fact, it indicates that each “kind” appeared suddenly, with no true transitional forms linking it with any previous “kind,” as required by the evolution theory.

The basic unit of living things is the cell, and the basic material that makes up a cell is protein. Evolutionists acknowledge that the probability of the right atoms and molecules falling into place to form just one simple protein molecule is about 1 in 10*113, or 1 followed by 113 zeros. In other words, it could take 10*113 chances for the event to occur once. Coincidence? I think not.

Source(s): Prophesy: The Bible contains numerous prophecies, many of which have already been fulfilled. Consider 1 example. Through the prophet Isaiah, who lived in the eighth century B.C.E., God foretold that the city of Babylon would be destroyed. (Isaiah 13:19; 14:22, 23) Details were given to show just how this would happen. Invading armies would dry up Babylon’s river and march into the city without a battle. That is not all. Isaiah’s prophecy even named the king who would conquer Babylon—Cyrus.(Isaiah 44:27–45:2) History backs this up. When you weigh up the evidence it is quite astounding. I can recommend a book to give you the basics of what is in the bible, the rest is up to you. I looked into other holy books but nothing ever compared or could provide enough evidence for me! Perhaps you should do the same, decide for yourself what is true and what is not. What does the bible really teach? http://www.jw.org/en/publications/books/bible-teac...

Ok so basically it's something like this. How does anyone know which God is real?

Sure most religions have their holy book (eg, the Bible) but those books were written by men. And they written by after the events happened, sometimes hundreds of years after so how do we know that they even got the right story?

god tells us it was right and god told men what to write

When word is passed through people, people can tweak the story a little or may forget the exact words...so things in the bible must have changed a little. All those facts and everything...what if they are not facts?

wrong just because they could does not mean they did

Yes there is proof that there was a man named Jesus and he came around and messed things up a little and was crucified, that much can be proven...but did he really raise from the dead?

yes god tells us he did as do men who saw him after the resurrection

god does not support other false religions

They have faith in their god too...how do I know they're not right and I am wrong?

by what gd tells us what is right

What if I've been following the wrong God all along? then you would be in trouble

    How can I know?

by reading what god says is the right way in the bible

So what exactly is this "proof" of some god's existence you speak of?

I know you didn't use that word, but you said how the world has shown you that. In what way?

Sounds like you could use a better understanding of science. It offers much more satisfying answers than "this must be the work of God." It's also interesting and a bit sad when people deny evolution even though it's a fact that it's an ongoing process. That scientists have literally seen alleles change from generation to generation with their own eyes.

As for all the stuff you said that you're better off believing in some God than not believing...that's essentially Pascal's Wager. You're assuming that there are only 2 possibilities here: 1) God exists and you believe in him you're safe and if you don't you're screwed, or 2) God doesn't exist and thus it doesn't matter what you believe. You're leaving out option 3) an entirely different god exists. What if you believe in the wrong god? For all you know, the god that actually exists will send you to hell for believing in the wrong god. There are thousands of gods that humanity has believed in. Each of them is just as credible as the rest. They're all based on no evidence whatsoever.

I can honestly say that if you had a much better understanding of science, you would realize that god isn't necessary to explain anything. God is irrelevant. That god is just another way of saying "I don't know how to explain this, so I'm just going to assert that god did it despite there being no evidence for its existence."

As someone who cares about you (not in some creepy way) I'll tell you that if you're trying to find answers to things like this, don't ask it here...you're either going to get some short "how do you know? you don't, cuz God doesn't exist" answers from people who don't believe in a God, or answers from people who do believe in a God, but aren't educated enough to answer your questions completely and in depth. I suggest researching stuff or reading books on these topics...just a suggestion. Sorry I couldn't actually answer the question, but I'm no Bible scholar so I'd be one of those people trying to explain things I haven't learned in depth for myself and I don't want to say anything wrong. God bless :)

You have a very valid point, and the one suggestion I can give, I hope it helps, is pray earnestly, with all your heart seeking the truth. God will answer you, not necessarily with words, but then again maybe so, but usually for me I feel the presence of the holy spirit, and I feel a sort of knowing of whether something is true or not. When I read the bible I pray over it, when I read the book of Mormon, same thing I pray. at one point I was very skeptical about God and religion in general, I even thought that the church of jesus Christ of latter day saints was a cult, but now I am a member, and almost every day I feel confirmation of it being true.

"but did he really raise from the dead?"

12 poor Jews sure thought so. They thought it so much that they all put their lives on the line (and 11 of them lost those lives) in order to spread the message that he rose from the dead. And they were so zealous that they sowed seeds that would eventually convert the most powerful empire that ever lived.

And after that empire fell, this group founded by an obscure Jewish carpenter continued to grow against all odds, surviving against and converting vicious barbarians, holding back Muslim expansion, went through a period of extreme corruption after the Black Death, ripped apart by the Protestant Revolt, surviving the brutal French Revolution and related political movements, and survived against communism that sought to destroy the it.

Without Divine intervention, these things could not be possible.

Mohammad was quite obviously a liar. If you read his life, he made his religion to further his own political power. He made certain cities holy in order to assure his alliances, for instance.

You should try praying. And I mean really praying, not just petitioning for a new bicycle or video game, but actually talking to God.

Satan try to control ur mind. just because u can see God, it doesnt mean u stop trusting His existence, just because u cant see the air, it doesnt mean u stop breathing. dont listen to devils' whspers
