I think he was recreating Christ's actions - closer to the actual actions of Christ rather than the (until now) current tradition of washing Bishops feet.

As Muslims also recognise Christ as a Prophet, it would not be dishonouring.

What he's meaning is he's trying to bring the Christians back to the original story

At the risk of being reported on here by a an activist Muslim group who always report anyone or question that involves any criticism of Islam, here is my answer.

If the pope washed the feet of a Muslim girl, then it would anger the Muslims who according to their own religious book, that woman, among other repressive things, should remain covered from head to toe.

And now we have the pope uncovering her feet and washing them? How dare he touch a Muslim female like that. I can hear the mufti's stirring up the young people in the mosques now, urging them to fight for allah. This will create hostility all over the Muslim world. It will give the Muslim mobs reason to burn a few more churches and kill a few more Christians, even though the Pope did it as an act of humility.

Yes. I think it was a smart move by the Pope. Remember not long before he did that he said "Our Muslim Brothers and Sisters" Which clearly made them happy. Now he washes a Muslim girls feet. men are not suppose to touch a Muslim women except her husband, so I see this as a clever move to test the waters with the Muslims, to see how they react.

I'm not Christian and I'm not Atheist but doesn't the Bible tell you to do that. Jesus washed the feet of his disciples.

    John 13:1-17

13 It was just before the Passover Festival. Jesus knew that the hour had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.

2 The evening meal was in progress, and the devil had already prompted Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus. 3 Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; 4 so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. 5 After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.

6 He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?”

7 Jesus replied, “You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.”

8 “No,” said Peter, “you shall never wash my feet.”

Jesus answered, “Unless I wash you, you have no part with me.”

9 “Then, Lord,” Simon Peter replied, “not just my feet but my hands and my head as well!”

10 Jesus answered, “Those who have had a bath need only to wash their feet; their whole body is clean. And you are clean, though not every one of you.” 11 For he knew who was going to betray him, and that was why he said not every one was clean.

12 When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. “Do you understand what I have done for you?” he asked them. 13 “You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am. 14 Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. 15 I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. 16 Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. 17 Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.

To the Pope and Catholics it will seem Christ like. To the Muslims it will seem like Christianity bowing to Islam. No, it wasn't the best thing to do. If it happens the way you've said. Jesus Christ washed the feet of his own and disciplined followers(disciples). The Popes actions were Biblically incorrect.and to a negative result compared to his intent.. Again, if the Popes actions were like as you have said. However, to put it bluntly, If before he did so he told me his intent I would have withstood him to the face to tell him his actions would be to the shame of Jesus Christ's name and the reputation of Christianity in the world. I would have thought it well my place to even sternly reprove him, and I would have expected him to listen to me. He probably would have, and if not he would have had negative consequences in his own life and stand for disobeying me. It is not a dishonor that he would wash the Muslim girls feet. It was a dishonor how people would see it( the results of his actions would be negative), and that he ignored it or worse was oblivious, and that his actions were not correct according to Biblical standard. He was not Given the authority to wash a Muslim girl's feet. Even for symbolic reasons or ritual, such was done of Jesus Christ toward his own disciples( disciplined followers of Jesus Christ, Christians). Jesus Christ, himself said, No man comes unto him accept his father draws him. If God did not draw the girl to Christianity, she is not a disciple of Christ. Christ, himself would not even think he had the authority to wash her feet, let alone should the Pope have done so. The feet" represent an action center. It symbolic representation of the cleansing of someones walk in life. Unless the girl came to him to teach her by God drawing her to Jesus Christ, even Jesus Christ, himself, would not have thought he should wash her feet. hat's just like is common among Roman Catholics, to replace what is of benefit with vain and pointless rituals of men, to be of even all the more a lack for benefit in result. To put it in a perhaps less politically correct sounding way, but a true one. Christianity "does not negotiate with terrorists"., nor would Christ violate the girl's free will, to wash her feet as like she was a disciple, if she was not willingly his disciple.

    Yes. I think he did.

Jesus walked with those of questionable morality and thus spread his word.

Would you deny a starving child a piece of bread because she was not of your tribe?

Read the Book of Ruth. It is short, and it may explain a few things better.

Dissing some ass might get the catholic church out of the hole it has put itself in but washing feet won't. That is just the pope being kinky. Foot fetishes don't harm little children they just make the look at you funny.

Personally I think it was a good thing because it shows humility, something men in his position rarely display. He humbled himself.

I think this meant her feet were dirty.

    Good hygiene is important.
