Has The Meaning Of Otaku Changed In Japan?

Or are people just loosing their minds? I keep seeing people saying 'otaku' this and 'otaku' that, and you know, other people saying don't use the word otaku, but I've also heard that the connotation of the word is changing in Japan. Instead of it being purely negative, it can be either positive or negative. Anybody out there (from Japan, or who live[d] in Japan preferably...) who knows for sure?

In 1980's, Otaku appeared as a derogatory term for "maniac"and it was somewhat serious, socially withdrawn, queer, shut-in and like.

During these 30 yrs. gradually it changed its meaning.

Nowadays, It means almost mere FAN, for example; baseball otaku. movie otaku, skii otaku and rather healthy than "maniac".

People don't hate to be called otaku any more.
