I was testing this over the week. If you completely skip over the field without placing anything in it *should allow you to skip over it (I say should because one of my tests seemed to require the number no matter what). If it doesn't skip over, I tried two tests that may help you. The biggest problem is that I think there are two sign in forms right now.

One test was with a valid mobile number, which validation was never sent to. I was able to access account settings after the initial setup and eliminate the number as long as I gave a secondary email.

The other test I chose a specific phone number (that wasn't even in my area) and that one allowed me to proceed (800 and 877 number don't work, neither do 000 and 555 numbers). However this test was also done the the version of the form that allowed me to put 4444444444 as a valid phone number and also allowed me to skip the field entirely.

At this time I do not see a way to overcome the yahoo account phone # other than making a gmail account instead.

Keep trying. I tried with a bogus number. No luck. They sent an SMS to god knows where, then a screen popped up asking me for a code. I tried again a few minutes later with the exact same acct info, but this time I put in a landline # to god knows where (no SMS capability, of course.) It went through just fine and I was not asked for a code. What an invasion of what little privacy to which Yahoo! purports to ascribe. You should know they scan your email, sometimes in person (!) and they allow tracking software on their site that you have to physically block. FYI. (I use abine.com's DoNotTrackMePlus.

I used Yahoo s own phone number. Once you add an email verification you can then remove the phone number.

Create a "fake" Google account, use that to create a Yahoo account. When you use the google account you are not asked for a phone number

Alrighty, this is the most current data, because I JUST MADE THIS ACCOUNT, haha. First, sign up on your computer. Then, when you pick sign up, click on something like this 'I'd rather use my current email address' and all you need to do is enter your current email, name, age, gender. Voila!
