I need some help with finding fabric?

I am not a big sewing buff but i wanted to try and sew some stuff. My question is the fabric I can buy at walmart that says 100% cotton is not soft and nice its stiff. Will it get softer when I wash it? If not what kind of fabric can I buy that is nice and soft like store bought clothes? thanks!

Fabric, even that used in clothing, has sizing (starch) to prevent wrinkles, and that is what makes it feel stiff. Washing will remove the sizing; repeated washing will make the cotton fabric that much softer.

my Wal Mart doesn't carry fabric anymore.

You may be getting 100% woven cotton for quilting

Or there is cheap cotton stiff cotton.

If you can go to Hancock or JoAnn fabrics I would
