Are Albanians descended from the ancient Illyrians?

An ancient Balkan tribe that inhabited much of modern-day Serbia, Croatia, Albania, Macedonia, etc. The Albanian language is an Indo-European language that is distinct from its Slavic, Romance, and Greek neighbors.

Is it a remnant of the ancient Illyrian language?

Update:

Thanks guys. They have an interesting history no doubt, a people apart from their Slavic and Greek neighbors in some ways. Plus there's the Muslim faith among many of them, which is a legacy of the Ottoman Turkish occupation. I didn't know the language had that much Latin influence either.

Albanians to me look intermediate between Italians and South Slavs.

    Albanians are of Thraco-Illyrian origin.

Some historians have hypothesized that we may com from Dacians though...

But one thing is sure, we albanians are the remnants of the semi-romanised paleo-balkan peoples (in fact something like 40% of our vocabulary is of latin origin).....but being both Illyrian and Thracian languages mostly unknown it's pretty hard to say which particular people we are the descendats of.

Then there's the caucasian "theory" that's taken seriously only by serbian and macedonian nationalists....for obvious reasons if you ask me...but until now there isn't any real proof except some silly videos on youtube!!

As an anthropologist I can tell- The modern albanians have a triangle face /especially the males/, which is more typical for the mountaineers or people from villages. Also, the name Kosovo is not albanian name either. They can not be ancestors of the illyrians, because the have arrived from the west side of the Caspian see. This is my opinion.

The Albanian language is of indo-european origin. So Albanian is of illyrian or thracian origin.

The ethnic origin of the Albanians is Pelasgian who were the ancient people of the Balkans. Dardania is the ancient name of Kosovo. Dardanians were Pelasgians and Dardanus was son of Zeus.

Ethnically Albanians are different from Italians. You can see similiraties only between some people : the Calabrese people looks like the people of Vlora more than the other people of Albania.
