The Army Rangers are a "light" infantry unit which means they deploy primarily on foot or with light vehicles, or sometimes they will paratroop in or repel out of a helicopter like in Black Hawk Down. Light infantry units use lighter vehicles like HUMVEEs. They don't use Tanks or other heavy machinery because those vehicles could get stuck in a lot of the harsh and complex terrain that Rangers are trained to work in. Basically, since they are fast and versatile, they only use stuff that can keep up with them.

    Ranger Special Operations Vehicle

The 75th Ranger Regiment is known as the worlds best light infantry unit, and by Table of Organization and Equipment (TOE) they are authorized the same equipment all light infantry units in the United States Army use (Currently HMMWV, or GMV, LMTVs and armored versions of each. Due to the type of fighting in Iraq they began receiving Strikers. By not having special looking vehicles they blend in and the enemy cannot specifically target them or prepare for them. However, due to their Special Operations relationship and their specific mission requirements they have some unique vehicles as well. Such as their Ranger Special Operations Vehicles (Modified Land Rover Defender 110s), and off road motorcycles Kawasaki KL250s or another enduro style bike. The RSOVs were swithced out during the War on Terror due to the difficulty to get standardized repair parts for GMVs which are HMMWVs (un armored) with extra running boards and grab handles along with swing arm mounts on the back for medium machine guns (M240B or M249 SAW). They mount either an M2 .50cal machine gun or an Mk-19 Automatic Grenade launcher (40mm machine gun) the same as the RSOVs did. Each vehicle will have six to eight Rangers on it. The reason for no Armor is that their intent is not to fight but to move fast.

Yes the 75th Ranger Regiment is a special operations unit. They are part of SOCOM and although there job may be different then Special Forces and Navy SEALs they are still as "Special Operations" as they are. Rangers can to much more then what standard infantry can.

The only thing they use that is unique to themselves is the RSOV. Otherwise, it's the same equipment that every other light infantry unit in the Army uses.
