They are relatively inexpensive. The light frequency can be adjusted by changing the ratios of fluorescent chemicals. They are more efficient than incandescent lights so it costs less in electricity bills. They generally have much longer life than incandescent lights.

Some contain hazardous amounts of mercury. They may require expensive electronics to run. The ballast may need to be replaced if the lamp starts flickering.
