Seniors: do any of you?
have trouble with fitted sheets? They say "fitted" but they do not stay snug around the mattress. I have the elastic holders for the corners but they don't help. What are the best sheets to buy? Last set I got was at Big Lots :((
Great Answers. Thanks to Everyone!!!

Here in the UK I buy "Extra Deep Fitted Sheets".
They are deeper in that they allow for a thicker
mattress and have more of the elasticated material
that folds underneath, thus they stay reasonably
snug.
Prior to finding these, I used ordinary fitted sheets
and instead of using the elastic corner holders, I
cut two lengths of elastic and sewed suspender
style grips to them and applied them just under
the mattress to fit width ways to hold the fitted
sheets in place. This did take two of us to apply
but they did at least hold the sheets in place.
When we were finished we had to sit down for
half an hour to get our breath back, but it is easier
with a single mattress !

Invest in some quality sheets, (you can sometimes get a good buy online,) make sure they are the right size for your mattress and make sure the elastic fits under the edge of the mattress on all four corners. Could be you need a new mattress if it can't hold the corners snugly.

I think that it has a lot to do with the exact measurements of the bed and the sheet. There are many different sizes and you can't just assume that "king size" or "queen size" is going to fit your bed. I measured my bed ( including the depth of the mattress) and now I have three pairs of sheets that never slip off.
Its also good to buy the tailored sheets - where they are cut to fit around the corner of the mattress. Many sheets are just rounded off on the corners and then elasticized - so there is a lot of fabric around that corner and they will slip off. A tailored sheet is more likely to stay put.

No trouble since I bought the last ones that are a generous size for a deep mattress and the corners are fully elasticated. They were more expensive than previous sheets but I bought them in a sale.

I've always had that problem with fitted sheets. I really think it depends on the thread count or the actual quality of the sheets. Since I can't afford the really expensive ones, I use those little elastic holders, as you called them. They look kind of like garters from old fashioned garter belts, and they work GREAT and hold the sheets in place until it's time to wash them. I don't wash the garters though because I'm afraid they will stretch out. I got them at Walmart, if that helps.

I always have trouble with bottom fitted sheets and will not be buying any more. I prefer to use a flat double sheet as a bottom sheet on my single bed and then it all stays tucked in. That is how beds used to be made up when I was a kid and we didn't come all untucked in the middle of the night or every time we rolled over.
I find that brand new fitted sheets usually stay put until the first wash and then they shrink.
If you are using a double bed try king size flat sheets instead. If using a king size bed I don't know what the answer is, sorry.

I buy fitted sheets but I also use an elastic strap goes under neath the mattress connecting the sheet that tucks under the mattress - you find these straps where you buy the sheets in the same department. The sheet stays on the mattress better.

Buy a higher quality sheet set, one with more depth. Most of the newer sets are for thicker mattresses, wich I suspect is your problem. Big lots usually sells a low quality or close-outs. Try Home Goods for 1st quality at better prices.

I have gotten sheets that fit deeper mattresses. I do not have a Big Lots but find K Mart and J C Penneys a good option for sheets and towels. Good Luck.

Pillow-top mattresses need sheets with deeper pockets in order not to slip off. Buy 400-thread Egyptian cotton sheets, and it is best not to dry them in a dryer on too high a setting, or they will shrink. Also, do not wash them in really hot water. A blend is really better for less shrinkage (polyester/cotton), but they do not feel as good on the bed to me.
If you remove sheets from the dryer fast, there is no need to iron them just to mess them up once you lie on them. A waste of time in my house.
