1)Rip Van Winkle's wife spends her time chiding him for spending all his time helping the villagers and not helping out in the household.On the other hand,the villagers like him a lot and treat him well because he helps them out a lot.
2)By chiding him,she forces Rip Van Winkle to spend more time helping out at home rather than spend all his time helping the villagers,but apparently this appears to have little to no effect on Rip Van Winkle.
