Problems with my boat engine alternator?

My boats engine (Perkins Sabre MTI300) alternator gives me problems. After cleaning all 12 volt + & - leads & contacts, no more interruptions in the charging status occure. The dashboard DC volt meter shows 14 volts charging, but the red warning light on same dashboard is burning slightly, even at higher engine RPM. After 7 years of no problems, this is worrying me. Before, the red "no charge" warning light did burn after starting up the engine, but after briefly increasing RPM in idle the warning light Always went out completly.

I would remove the alternator and take it to a shop where it can be tested.
