Help understanding the Buoyant force?
A block of ice floats on a fluid and a block of wood, which is less dense, is completely submerged. Both blocks have the same volumes. Which block experiences the greater buoyant force? It says the block of wood but I have no idea why!
Thanks!

Although the wood is less dense than the ice, it absorbs a great deal of the water. Therefore, assuming that its volume remains the same, it is now more dense than the ice. Therefore it sinks further than the ice, so it displaces a greater volume of water than the ice, so the upthrust on the wood is greater than the upthrust on the ice. That is to say the block of wood experiences the greater buoyant force.
