Guns that shoot plastic BB's?
What are they called and are they different from BB guns that shoot steel BB's?

because guns that shoot plastic bbs are supposed to be safe to shoot at other people in something called airsoft play.
sometimes airsoft guns are used for target shooting too.
Velocity:
most airsoft guns shoot 250-400 fps with a .2 gram plastic 6mm BB
compared to most BB guns that shoot 350-750 fps with a .34 gram steel .177 (4.5mm) BB
Range:
Airsoft BB range is typically 50-150 feet. they can be dangerous at up to 350 feet.
BB gun BB range is typically 50-85 yards (150 to 255 feet) and can be dangerous at up to 250 yards (750 feet)
Energy:
Airsoft is not designed ot cause serious injury and should not be used for pest control or hunting. the average airsoft gun can't hit a crow at 100 feet and if it did the BB will not kill the crow, it will only injure the bird.
BB guns is not ideal for hunting but can be used for pest control. they have the velocity and accuracy to hit a crow 100 feet away and the energy to kill a pigeon, rat or snake.
Injury to people:
most airsoft guns does not shoot a BB heavy or fast enough to penetrate skin protected by clothing, impacts on bare skin will break the skin but the BB does not enter the body.
with BB guns BBs typically penetrate 2-4 inches of flesh on impact and 1-2 layers of clothes does little to reduce the BB's velocity or penetration.
getting shot with an airsoft gun in airsoft play it will sting a little for about 30 seconds. if impacted on bare skin the skin breaks, it will bleed but some cleaning and bandage with neosporin (antibiotic ointment) is sufficient to handle the injury.
getting shot with a BB gun generally results in bleeding and a prompt trip to the doctor or hospital. it will be very painful and there is a foreign object inside the body. it may result in severe bleeding if it punctured a major blood vessel. you cannot put slap a band aid over this or assume some antibiotic ointment will fix it, if the object is not removed infection may result.
there are a few airsoft guns that are in between the two categories, for example the firepower vsr-10, a 4 joule airsoft gun and my kjw m700 sniper. the firepower vsr-10 is an airsoft gun but it is not intended for airsoft play. with a .25 gram plastic BB it can shoot about 800 fps and put someone in the hospital. using aluminum or steel BBs you could hunt small game with it. it is not a very good replacement for a good .22 cal pellet gun.
the kjw m700 is also on the upper end of airsoft guns. I'm trying to calibrate mine to shoot 450 with .25 BBs- airsoft field limit. currently it's shooing 660 fps with .28, and 490 with .22 pellet (even though the 22 pellet is smaller than bore). it cannot be used in airsoft play and more powerful than my pellet guns. until the problem is fixed its being used to mitigate the effects of the ammo shortage. it's very accurate with the upgraded 6.01mm tight bore, fully supported inner barrel and use of precision .28 5.95mm 'sniper' BBs. I can shoot a 2.5" target at 50 yards. it's also proven to be excellent for pest bird control, a well placed glass BB has birds dropping dead.
most upgraded airsoft rifles and 'snipers' can shoot up to 550 fps with .2 gram. it is really only green gas and co2 'sniper' guns that can shoot even faster with heavier BBs.
BB guns tend to be more sporting oriented, while airsoft tends to replicate real guns. you find all kinds of M4, AK47, SCAR and G3-influenced airsoft guns, but there is no such thing for BB guns.
airsoft is defined by shooting a 6mm or 8mm BB. there is a lack of specific definition beyond that. because of this, there are some guns called airsoft but in reality are just as powerful as firearms. for example the now discontinued Piper Precision Products Venom 6mm 10 barreled SMG, which can be tweaked to shoot 500 fps with .88 gram steel BBs 50 times a second, 3000 times a minute. at that kind of velocity and rate of fire is the rough equivalent of shooting a load of 12 gauge #4 buck twice a second or 120 times a minute.

The size of the ammunition (in example 6mm vs .177) is what matters. The 480 feet per second is the power of the round not the size and it actual depends on the size and weight of the ammo...
