Do Subarus still have head gasket issues?
I still drive an '01 Legacy that already had the head gaskets replaced. In the near future, I might trade this car for a new Suby. But I wonder if the head gaskets are still a trouble spot. What do you think, forum?

The answer is simple - No! The head gasket problem was resolved with the introduction of the 3rd generation Outback. Subarus with the 2.5l standard engine since 2005 are perfectly sound. Any Outback (or any Subaru using the same 2.5l engine) prior to 2004 still has a potential to the gasket failure if they haven't already been repaired by a previous owner. In most cases, a replaced gasket solves the problem (for about $2000). But statistically, it is hard to find one with a problem. Less than 2% of Subarus sold from 1996 to 2004 with the engine type in question has developed gasket issues. I had a 98 Outback that developed a gasket failure after it was 13 YEARS OLD. Although I drew the short straw, it took a decade and a half of fun driving before I had a problem. I do know it was repaired as I saw it on the road a couple years ago. If you're trading in a Subaru in that range that has been repaired, have a good Subaru mechanic look at it for signs the gasket is bad (high engine temp, coolant leaking out from under the head, etc) to be sure, but I would state that it was fixed since any good buyer will want to know it. It is a concern, but it shouldn't keep anyone from looking at a Subaru from that era, just do your homework before you buy.

My 2005 2.5 Outback is just in the shop now with the head gasket leaking so bad there was a puddle under the car. 102,000 km. I have had a few really cold starts (a few cases where no electric for block heater...) Some people have stated the problem has been fixed with Subaru s history of head gasket problems. I wonder if it is a cold climate issue. Are owners in "winter cites" more susceptible to these problems?

The question is, "Do Subarus still have head gasket issues?". And the answer for me is a definite YES! My 2005 Outback 2.5L 4 cylinder with 120,000km on the dial has just developed a double head gasket leak. I pampered this car and had it serviced as recommended. I wrote to Subaru Australia asking for assistance, they declined. When you consider the boxer engine has two head gaskets and that they both failed, it's a pretty lousy situation.

There are still head gasket issues. Look around the internet forums and you will see this is very common. My 2009 Outback 2.5 engine has a blown gasket and a $2400 repair bill. The dealer wouldn't come right out and say it but they were extremely familiar with explaining this repair.

My 2004 Legacy 54K needs a set of new head gaskets. It seems I should have too done my homework. Since then my research shows head gaskets are still a problem with the 4 cylinder.

My 2006 Impreza has a blown gasket and oil leaking from seals. The car has been carefully maintained and driven. The transmission is also starting to give up. This with 116,000 miles, which is not what I expected from a Subaru.
