Will my images be recovered?
The other when I came home from work, someone in my family had been on the computer and it was locked up shut down with the message something to the affect Windows was installing updates, don’t turn off or unplug computer. After quite some time I did a hard shut down, as I said I thought it was hung up. When I restarted the computer saw the external drive that contains thousands of personal images and videos. The drive is now in the hands of a technician in hopes of recovery. I’m wondering the likely hood he will be able to recover my photos.
I'm sorry should have said my computer could see the drive, but not access it.

I'm guessing most likely yes. I'm confused to as why your external was affected because usually it's the drive that's being written on that gets affected.
To prevent data loss in the future, I recommend uploading your photos and important documents to a free reliable cloud like box.com and/or backing up to a usb flash drive.

no problem he will recover it. It is just OS problem you shut down your pc during update process according to your description. So no problem. if the problem is with windows technician will get it new in your pc not effecting any of your files specially photos & videos.
