I have a Samsung GT-S5830 and I am trying to back it up through Kies. Do I need Outlook to do so?
It keeps showing an error in the system.

No not at all you can do a back up in file format for specific things like photos etc or a complete backup either to your PC or to the cloud. Kies is very user friendly and even allows drag and drop.
It has a good help feature too. There are multiple ways to back up your phone with kies it all depends on which you prefer they all work well.
You can even do a back up to a sd memory card in your phone if you like.
