I had to pass a background check in order to enlist?
in the Army and use an assault weapon. Why do some people insist civilians shouldn't have to pass one in order to be able to obtain the same type of weapon?

you had to pass a background check for the military for any MOS, they no longer accept criminals .and scumbags in the military.

The background check was to get into the Army. The military assault weapon is a select fire weapon, semi-auto or three round burst or full auto. The civilian versions are semi-auto only so not the same.
The background check is not the goal of the liberals. They had over 38,000 people FAIL the background check yet they prosecuted less than 1% of them. Obviously they are not concerned about those who fail the background check but those who PASS it. On each background check form is a place to write make, model and serial number of the gun you bought. The dealer has to keep those forms and they are available at all times to the ATF. So what if the feds do not keep a central list, all they have to do is come into an area, hit the dealers and they got info on EVERY gun sold at that store since 1968. And most of those guns will be at the same place with the same owner as on the forms. It is the ability to FIND the guns and CONFISCATE the guns that is their ultimate goal.
In New York City in the 1960s they did a rifle and shot gun registration. No harm in registering right? But in the 1990s they came to your door and basically you had three choices, give them the gun, sell the gun to someone outside the city or move the gun outside the city. In California in the 1990s they had an assault rifle registration. Due to a technicality, they were able to use those same registration lists in some cases to confiscate the guns. In New Orleans they just went door to door to grab the guns, had they had a list, they would have hit those with multiple guns first. Do not believe them, their ultimate goal is confiscation.
Lastly, if you listen to them in Congress, talking about the bill under discussion that will extend somewhat the back ground checks, they say, "It is a good start." Meaning they still want more and they will be back year after year, for more and more.

There are already background checks required. Why not ENFORCE the existing laws instead if passing new ones?
And do you really want the GOVERNMENT to decide if you are mentally unstable, or a health care professional that has the training and experience to do so?

Everyone has to pass a background check to buy a gun right now. The new one they're trying to pass has some fine print on the bottom that I don't like.
