INR or PT Prothrombin time too high?

Mom is 87, on coumadin, and blood test shows prothrombin time of 30, INR is 2.8. Is that safe for an elderly cardiac patient? Her legs are often swollen and painful, too.

    For most patient's, that's fine. AFib patients : 2-3, Artificial heart valve patients : 2.5 - 3.5.

These are just basic guides. Different patients may have different ranges. Ask her doctor.

There are different ranges that the INR is kept at for different kinds of problems. Call her doc or Google whatever condition she has for which she is using the coumadin and see what it says. For example "INR for atrial fibrillation".
