How to get a replacement California motorcycle title?
I had a friend that owed me some money and he couldn't pay it so he gave me his motorcycle. He doesn't have the title because he lost it and he had used the motorcycle as a track bike. Therefore it didn't even have a license plate on it. I moved completely across the country from him and now he will not answer my phone calls since he said he was going to go to the DMV and get a replacement. How do I get a replacement title on a motorcycle that I know the VIN on but I am not the titled owner of since it is apparent that I will have to get the title? Thanks for the help. You can't.
Title's are transferred, not created. Your friend needs to transfer ownership via a duplicate title from the CA DMV.Once you have his signed title (and possibly a Bill of Sale) most any state DMV will allow you to apply for a new title and register/tag the bike in that state.

YOU can't! ONLY the legal owner of a vehicle can get a duplicate title. If your "friend" was the legal owner he is the ONLY one that can get duplicate title. By the way, since YOU don't have a title for it YOU can't legally sell it either.
You can try for a "Bonded" title, but that process will probably cost you more than the bike is worth.
