Not necessarily. Different Blu-ray Disc Players (BDP) support different formats. A "BDP" without model number is sure to play Blu-ray discs. Most (95%) support "DVD" format. The easiest way to see is on the unit in question. All disc formats that are supported will have their logo's proudly displayed. So if you see the "DVD" logo but not the "DVD-RW" logo, you can play DVD's but not DVD-RW. There are Blu-ray players that do not play DVDs, but they're uncommon or rare. Good luck!

Yes, and if the blu ray player is good then a DVD will look a lot better when played on a Blu-ray player than when played on a DVD player.
I bought a new HD tv and Blu-ray player last year and the DVDs look great. Some almost as good as Blu-ray. It was a big surprise.

Blu-ray players not only play DVDs, but they can up-convert standard DVDs as well. While you do not get the same 1080p picture quality as blu-ray discs. Some Blu-ray players do a decent job up-coverting DVDs to near 1080p levels.
