What is the difference between ghost, phantom, and spectre?

I always hear them used interchangebly

    Yes they basically mean the same thing.

    Mostly they are the same thing but a phantom does not necessarily have to be anything supernatural-- it can be something very elusive like the phantom of the opera was actually only a deranged man.

    Different words for the same thing---Generally a "Spirit" of sorts. Spirit of the dead being optional.
