Hawaii is part of the South Pacific Polynesian culture. Hawaii did not have an ancient civilization such as Sumeria or the Aztecs but they did have a very beautiful ancient culture. In order to independently reach a level of society that would be classified as a civilization the area most not only be close to a fresh water source but have domestic crops and domestic animals native to the region. Hawaii like many islands does not have domestic crops native to the region that could feed a large population or that are protein rich.

HuCipher is correct. The ancient civilisation on Hawai'i was the Hawaiian civilisation; part of the wider Polynesian civilisation. The Polynesians were remarkable navigators and astronomers. The population of Hawai'i was considerably higher, before European contact - possibly around one million people. Hawai'i was an independent and internationally recognised kingdom, until overthrown by the United Sates in 1893, to become a US territory (Hawai'i became a US State in 1959).
