what is "expressive deviance"?

Is it the need to commit crimes and be deviant? Not quite sure. I would really appreciate it if someone could clear this up!

Thanks

Expressive deviance means things like sexual deviance or drug use. Basically it's to do with seeking pleasure and thrills. It could involve committing crimes, but that's not the main point.

"Expressive deviance" contrasts with "instrumental deviance". Instrumental deviance refers to deviant acts committed as a rational response to a threat. Expressive deviance refers to acts of thrill-seeking.
