If you are relating to the book "To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee the mockingbird is significant because it is a symbol. The mockingbird could be a symbol for a few different characters in the book. If you look at a mockingbird in real life you can see that it is a bird of innocence and defenselessness. If see in the book that Tom Robinson is a innocent African-American that was just placed in the wrong place at the wrong time and was falsely accused. Tom Robinson being a African American did not or barely had any type of defense in this situation because of the society that hated the race that was apparent in that time. Though you can interpret that some other characters could be candidates for "being" the symbol of the mockingbird, Tom Robinson is the most significant candidate.

Mocking birds give pleasure, just like the black guy in the book.
