Fixed camera mounting system?

I need a system for mounting a camera to an object that will allow me to remove and replace the camera at-will, yet will always maintain the camera's orientation.

For example, I'd like to photograph a scene once a week over a period of a year, but I don't want to leave the camera at that location. I'd like to go to the site once a week, mount the camera and be assured that it is in the exact same position and orientation as it was last week, take a picture, then remove the camera and repeat next week.

The problem with most screw-type mounts is that I can't reliably replicate the direction the camera is pointing as the camera can pivot on the axis of the screw.

I'm sure there's something out there that does what I want, but I don't know what to call it. I imagine it involves some sort of mounting plate on the camera that can be installed in the exact same position every time relative to the camera.

The problem is that still cameras, unlike video cameras, rarely come with locator pins holes on their base, and if they do, they are non-standard. It is quite maddening that such a simple concept has not been implemented as a standard.

However, there are some solutions, although they are kind of pricey.

What you want is in Arca-Swiss style quick release mount with a mounting plate created for your specific camera model. The mounting plates usually have a lip and/or a small stud so that the camera cannot rotate on the plate.

Here is a link that describes one such system in more detail

One problem is that your particular camera may not have a plate available. In that case you'll need to get clever and make your own custom plate.

On the exact location, cement your tripod up to the head. Make sure the quick release plate is not included but can still be installed. Take off any handles if present.

Higher end tripods come without heads, as you typically purchase those separately.

And if you buy a head with a quick disconnect release plate, it will perhaps do what you are looking to do.

However, the head itself, while having the ability to align itself on the tripod, still attaches to the camera via 1/4" screw. So you must never disturb the attachment plate within that year. You perhaps can do this, but you will have to find a plate that allows you to change batteries without disturbing it.

Here is an example of one of dozens of heads available:

Note that the best heads use Swiss-Arca plates, but these plates may be too large for your use as they may interfere with battery removal, etc.

Check out the specifications for this tripod. I have two camera quick release plates. One for each camera, as a result I use a tripod more often which results in better, sharper pictures. It is a win, win for me.
