Did Putin make the wrong choice to end Chechen terrorism?
Putin tried the carrot. He poured money into Chechnya and the capital Grozny is now prosperous and has the largest mosque in central Asia. Chechens respond to his generosity by bombing the Moscow to St. Petersberg train and bombing Boston. Americans objected to Russia sending in the army to quell Chechen terrorism (Moscow theater, Beslan school). Will Americans object if Putin sends in the T-72's and T-90's now?

Believe it or not hostilities in Chechen republic reduces by a huge factor.
As of "they just want to be free" is simply not true. The few years they had real deal independence they entroduced one of the most hardcore sharia laws and tried raiding neighbors, which ended with the second Chechen war, which ended their sovereignity.
Independent Chechnya now mean balkanization of the Northern Caucasus and potentially lead to the same situation they have now in Palestine/Middle East with constant warfare and terrorist activity.

I think he is pulling more money out then putting back in.
But that's not the point. Like Northern Ireland, Chechens just want to be FREE.
