    Don Quixote was the first and gave us the word quixotic(great word for all scrabble players!)

    Meursault in THE STRANGER by Albert Camus fits the bill.

    A less well-known example, but still a good one, is Fast Eddie Felson, the title character of Walter Tevis' novel, THE HUSTLER.
