You don't need lessons.
Youtube is a great source of information. Also look up the forum on ultimate guitar; very helpful website. Another website I like is called fret jam.

Yes. I highly recommend you learn any way you can. It's a great thing. I learned by sheer imitation of sound, starting with just notes, and then with some helpful hints by other players learned how to find the chords from the notes. (The strings are from thickest to thinnest EADGBE).
But primarily I just sat down with a tunebox, played a cover song over and over in front of me until I got it down from listening and trial-and-error elimination of possibilities.
Let your ears tell you what is right.

Once you get a feel for the instrument, it is. When I was getting lessons I'd watch YouTube tutorials on the side and it helped me to advance quickly.

"Self learn" - that's a new expression! Most of what is on You Tube and intended for beginners is terrible, ill-informed trash put there by people who, I presume, want to try to how off. If you want to learn to play properly get a good teacher or, failing that, a beginner's book.
