the baking time all depends on how thick the fish fillet is.
There is no set time because all fillets are not the exact same thickness.
In general, when frying fish, an inch thick fillet takes about 10 minutes, 5 minutes per side. Fish is done the minute it flakes easily. Any longer and fish and in fact all sea food gets tough and rubbery.

There really isn't a "blanket" answer for your question due to different size whiting fillets. This recipe http://recipes.sparkpeople.com/recipe-detail.asp?r... suggests 2-3 minutes per side and a final 5 in the oven for the sauce. Less than the normal 20 minutes. A smaller fillet could easily be done in 7 minutes but of course it's all up to the recipe and size of fillet.

Are you sure the words 'bake' and '7 minutes' were used in the same sentence? 7 minutes per side on a frying pan makes sense, but I've never heard of baking any fish filet for that long. It all comes down to the thickness of it, but for most fish recipes, filets should be baked anywhere from 15-25 mintues until fish flakes with a fork.

I your whiting fillets quite thin are you are baking those fish fillets in a preheated hot oven, say 450F (230C), then they may cook through in 7 minutes. I often bake fish fillets in a preheated 375F (190C) oven for 20 minutes.

20 minutes and they will be over cooked. I cook my fish for 5 minutes each side at medium heat. It's easy to tell when there perfect. There done when it flakes easily with a fork.
