The human ear canal is about 2.9 cm long. If it is regarded as a tube open at one end and closed at the eardrum, what is the fundamental frequency around which we would expect hearing to be most sensitive?

    The fundamental mode of vibration for this tube has a standing wave node (stationary point) against the closed end and the first anti-node at the open end .. making the tube length = 1/4 fundamental wavelength (λₒ) ..

    λₒ = 4 x 2.90cm = 11.60 cm = 0.116 m

    For sound wave velocity, v = 340 m/s

    fₒ = v/λₒ .. .. 340m/s / 0.116m .. .. ►fₒ = 2931 Hz (2.93 kHz)
