Aren't they both major? Can someone please clarify?

Fmaj7 refers to an F triad (F,A,C) with the major 7th (E). Whereas, F7 refers to a dominant 7, in which there is an F triad (F,A,C) with the minor 7th (Eb).

Fmaj7 = the 7th is a major interval
F7 = the seventh is a minor interval
Similarities = Both of their triads (primary chord) are a major chord.

An F7 is in reality an F flatted-7. This being a much more commonly used chord than a true F(major)7, it is referred to as F7. They say major 7th on a F maj-7 to distinguish the difference (meaning this is a true 7th chord as opposed to the more common flatted-7th chord). Of course this is for all chords, A, B, C, etc. too
