What ever happened to super groups?

what happened to music that there are no real super groups?..for those of you born 1970 or later, there were groups such as Yes, Emerson Lake and Palmer, The Who, Led Zeppelin, Supertramp, RUSH ( that's right RUSH) that would sell out arena after arena night after night. Has the music industry become so fickle for the sake of making the quick buck and letting true talent live a short life??.

When you say super groups, do you mean groups comprising of 'legendary' members that are all from different bands originally?

Or band that everyone likes, and therefore sell things much better?

Now, I don't know what the 1970's was like (I'm a 90's kid), but every band that you've listed there I like, specifically Yes (I've met Rick Wakeman a couple of times!). I think it's that music nowadays has split down into so many paths, with bands eager to find their own little niche, so they have their own sound. The downside being that, because it's a bit of a niche, there is no guarantee that lots of people will enjoy it.

The Who, Yes, Emerson Lake and Palmer, Focus, Rush etc were all brand new sounds for their time and there was very little else like it. Think of things like pirate radio, that lived for that music and only for the music. You don't get places like that today.

I think there is also a matter of taking time to find bands that aren't just there to cash in. Many are like this, and have been showing true talent for years and years, such as the bands Dream Theater or Machine Head, which have been around for ages, part of which, they were both under the radar.

Many bands still sell out areas every night, they just might not be what you consider super bands. Some bands even sell out area tickets within a few minutes of them being put on sale!

Unless you're using the word "super" just to mean "good", you're mistaken about what the term "supergroup" means. ELP is the only supergroup in your list.

A "supergroup" is/was a group consisting of members who had already been successful in other groups. For example, Keith Emerson had been in The Nice, Greg Lake in King Crimson and Carl Palmer in (I think) both The Crazy World of Arthur Brown and Atomic Rooster.

The last supergroup I can think of would be Asia. Actually, no, that would be The Traveling Wilburys.

I think you are misusing the term "supergroup"

A supergroup is a band made of several different band members from an already famous band.

A supergroup would be like Zwan because it was formed by members of The Smashing Pumpkins, Slint, Tortoise, Chavez, and A Perfect Circle.

Another good example is also The Traveling Wilburys consisting of Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, Roy Orbison and Tom Petty.

There are still supergroups forming today like Them Crooked Vultures who are a rock supergroup that formed in Los Angeles in 2009 by John Paul Jones (former member of Led Zeppelin), Dave Grohl (of Foo Fighters and formerly of Nirvana), and Josh Homme (of Queens of the Stone Age). The group also includes guitarist Alain Johannes during live performances. The band began recording in July 2009.

    Hope this was helpful.
