Would a case be considered a "legal authority" in legal research?

Yes. As long as the case decision holds precedence. It must have been decided by a court in the same jurisdiction or from a court of higher standing.
Example:
Indiana trial court decisions must follow all case law from other Indiana Trial Court, Appellate Courts, and Supreme Courts.
A decision made in an Ohio trial court is not precedent law. It could be used as persuasive authority, but holds no legal authority.
