I'm sort of a classic quote monster. Thus, I will 1 per genre:

    Rhetorical Literature:

“He who controls the past controls the future. He who controls the present controls the past.” - 1984 by George Orwell

Purpose: 1984 depicts corruption. This quote refers to the cycle between realities.

    Non-Fiction Literature:

"I want friends, not admirers. People who respect me for my character and my deeds, not my flattering smile. The circle around me would be much smaller, but what does that matter, as long as they're sincere?" - The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank.

    Purpose: Anne is deciphering society.

    Epic literature:

“Moonlight drowns out all but the brightest stars.” - The Lord of the Rings by Tolkien.

Purpose: Depicts the need to stand out and make a difference.

    British Literature:

"And this our life, exempt from public haunt, Finds tongues in trees, books in the running brooks, Sermons in stones, and good in everything." As You Like it by Shakespeare.

Purpose: "Public haunt" refers to society, and this states that one can truly live to the fullest extent without worrying about judgement from society.

    Surreal poetry:

    “Deep into that darkness peering,

long I stood there, wondering, fearing, doubting,

dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before.” - The Raven by Edgar Allen Poe.

Purpose: Poe is taking the risk of having dreams.

    Religious poetry:

"God preaches, a noted Clergyman –

And the sermon is never long,

So instead of getting to Heaven, at last –

I’m going, all along." - Some Keep the Sabbath Going to Church by Emily Dickinson.

Purpose: Dickinson wrote this poem when she was very depressed and felt that her faith was the only thing keeping her alive. It reflects her life at the time.

    Grief poetry:

"The angels, not half so happy in heaven,

    Went envying her and me-

Yes!- that was the reason (as all men know,

In this kingdom by the sea)

That the wind came out of the cloud by night,

Chilling and killing my Annabel Lee." - Annabel Lee by Edgar Allen Poe.

Purpose: Poe is writing about his deceased wife (Annabel Lee is based off of his wife).
