Basic Canon camera question: What is the difference between the D numbers on Canon cameras?

For example on the side of my camera it says ''Canon EOS 1100D'' what does the 1100D mean? I have seen other numbers such as 70D what is the difference? Maybe the price varies but why? What makes the price of the 70D higher than the 1100D?

    Different models with different features.

    It's sort of like comparing a Mercedes C250, C300, and C350. Different models, different features, different prices.
