Are patients in hospital allowed to use their iPads?
I know that cell phones are banned but what about iPads?

Yes.
Last time I was a patient in hospital I was asked to complete a survey of the care I received and that was given to me on an iPad. I also carried one with me on ward rounds and frequently see patients using them.
In short, it shouldn't interfere with any equipment.

Cell phones actually are no longer banned in many hospitals.
iPads are generally fine to use. Many hospitals offer wireless internet that patients can connect to, and many hospitals are currently using iPads regularly.
I work in a children's hospital, and we actually have iPads to offer patients and their families to use while they are there. I use iPads for distraction, too- when kids are having painful or uncomfortable procedures (IV starts, PICC insertions, LPs, etc.) I use iPads for diversions- games or music or even relaxation apps.
I also use iPads for teaching- I have pictures of various procedures on them to show kids, and have recordings of MRI sounds, as well as a game app that teaches kids about leukemia.
We will soon transition to EMR and our doctors will be using iPads in exam rooms and inpatient rooms for charting.

No problem.
It is true that cell phones used to be banned, but that was years ago (at my hospital anyway).

I've been able to use my laptop in the hospital, so an iPad should be okay, too.

When I was in hospital my cell phone was my lifeline. I'm in Australia but fairly sure that Canada would be similar, so long as you aren't in intensive care.

it all depends on the hospital. you're allowed to use phones & laptops at my local hospital as long as you're not too loud on them.
