What are bubbles in paint?

So I was washing my car a while ago and as I was cleaning the inside of the doors I noticed that there are tiny little paint bubbles, I don't know how long they have been there though because I rarely wash the inside of the doors. These bubbles are kinda squishy, it just feels like the paint lifted up, and the car is an 07 with little miles on it, so there is not visible rust anywhere. But these bubbles concern me, how long will they take to actually start to rust through? And is there anything I can do to either fix the problem or just stop it where it is?

Update:

It doesn't return to normal, and I guess squishy isn't the right word, they are soft but one bubble chipped a bit when I pressed in it, I'll do what you said and keep an old rage in the car to dry it off whenever it gets wet.

the squishy bubbles you talk about that are on the inside of the doors sound to me like factory seam sealer, it's just a bond between the shell and the skin that hold the 2 parts together. if you push on it and leave your fingerprint it should return to normal within a couple hours. but I would strongly recommend that when you wash your car, make sure you dry it and have a rag you don't care about and wipe the inside lip of all of your doors out. if you keep it clean "ish" it will last longer

Paint blisters or bubbles occur when there is loss of adhesion between the paint film and underlying surface. It can be corrected, but the cause of the problem must be addressed or it will recur.

What Causes Paint Bubbling or Blistering?

    • Moisture seeping in

    • Painting a damp, dirty, or hot surface , which someone may have done.
