What exactly is a maidan?

I'm currently reading "Behind the Beautiful Forevers" by Katherine Boo and right in the beginning it is mentioned that Abdul sleeps on a "gritty maidan". I just can either find a translation for "maidan", nor a definition, so I was hoping anyone here knew what it is.

I was picturing something licke a hammock, but I haven't found a way to varify anything.

The definition I've found says that a maidan is "an open area or space in or near a town, often used as a marketplace or parade ground," but I don't know if that fits the story you're reading at all. It could be the author misused the word, or perhaps there's another meaning somewhere that's harder to find.

    Hope this helps!

Maidan in Farsi is like a square, or a lot, sort of like a parking lot, which is usually paved with loose rocks.

Usually a maiden is a beautiful young virgin, but i'm betting in this case she's just a beautiful young woman.
