17 years old and going to pain management clinic for chronic knee pain?

Being very young, what exactly should I expect? My knee surgeon is sending me to this pain management clinic and I don't know what they will do. My leg was crushed (long story) and I have many torn muscles, cracks across my knee cap and many more issues. After my surgery has had over a year of recovery and the accident happened over 1 year ago I still suffer from pain daily. What can I expect from this pain clinic at age 17??

Doctors send patients to pain clinics because they don't want to be responsible for writing prescriptions for narcotic pain medications. There is an epidemic in this country of narcotic addicts who "doctor shop", going from doctor to doctor, getting large quantities of narcotic pain relievers to feed their addiction. Therefore, many regular doctors send chronic pain patients to pain management clinics where their pain can be managed with higher-level drugs. These pain management clinics in turn make patients sign a contract, stating that the patient will only obtain pain medication from that clinic. Finally, it is not unusual for patients to be drug-tested to be sure that they are not abusing street drugs or other prescription drugs. This is usually done with a urine test. They test for THC (marijuana) cocaine, amphetamines like street "speed" and prescription ADD meds, and opiates like painkillers. Patients disclose what medications they are on, and anything they have a prescription for is no problem.

The doctor there will likely have you rate your pain on a scale of 1-10. He will look over your notes to see what you have already been prescribed. Then he will prescribe something for the pain, which you will take as prescribed until your next appointment. (Prescription narcotics can make you nauseated and/or constipated) Then at your follow up appointment, he will ask how well that particular drug is handling your pain, and decide whether to keep you on it, increase the dosage, or put you on somethng else. Subsequent appointments will likely follow this pattern.

Your pain will be treated until u build up a tolerance or the doctor retires. Then u will not be given enough pain medication where u can decide to live with the pain or kill yourself. Sorry but your young and in 20yrs u will be considered young. By time your 50 u will probably have to resort to street drugs or have to decide if u what part of the day u want to be have mild pain relief. People think if u take this much your a drug addict instead it should be based off are u getting high off what u take. They wouldn't make an oxycotin pill that equals 32 percocets without Tylenol in one pill. Percocet has tylenol so u can only eat very little maybe 7-9 a day max but the main ingredient oxycodone it's based on how high your tolerance gets. When u or a loved one gets injured or sick u will understand.
