.....The late Vern Gosdin was ( and still is on the classic country stations) refereed to as the voice for his styling in singing a country song.
As for Jones being 81 and put on a pedestal one only has to look to the Grand Ole Opry to see Little Jimmy Dickens who at 92 still sings and is a frequent artist on the Opry as well as venues around Nashville.
Which brings us up to who is the voice of country music. This question can and will be debated.Names mentioned include (In no order);
George Strait
Alan Jackson
Trace Adkins
Josh Turner
Luke Bryan
Easton Corbin
There are others but these have gotten more mention as a traditional sounding voice of country music

I don't know that everyone recognized Jones as the voice of country music. Not everyone will agree and not everyone is a fan of him, but Strait has always been credited to have stayed to true traditional country. He's been around for decades and everyone knows him so i would say Strait as the voice of country music now.

I think Merle Haggard is the living voice of country. After him, I suppose you have to look at George Strait or Alan Jackson, but it's a big step down!

I was left devastated by George's passing.
But I think Peggy Sue Wright, Loretta Lynn and any male artist would take his place :)
