What kind of snake is this?

I found it while I was hiking a couple of days ago when I almost stepped on it.

    That is a Northern Water snake, harmless but feisty when handled.

    It's kind of hard to see the markings clearly in the pictures, but from what I can see and the shape of it's head, it looks like a rat snake. They're not venomous, and usually try to stay out of the way of people.

  • Looks like a Cottonmouth or a water snake imo.
