Why do we use safranin in gram/onion stain?

    In Gram stain, after washing, the Gram-positive cell remains purple while Gram-negative cell loses its purple color. Safranin is applied to stain Gram-negative bacteria a pink or red color.

    Is a biological stain used in histology and cytology.Safranin is used as a counterstain in some staining protocols, colouring all cell nuclei red.This is the classic counterstain in a Gram stain.
