Where is this from? Planets collide to form a star?

I know it's impossible for two planets to merge and become a star, since there's not nearly enough mass. But I remember hearing this from somewhere, and I can't remember if I saw it in some sci-fi movie/tv show, if some misinformed person tried to tell me this one time, or if it's a common misconception. Has anyone else ever heard of this? Is it from some movie or tv show?

Update:

To clarify, it's not possible for two planets to collide and form a star. The most massive planets are about 10 times the mass of Jupiter, and the minimum mass to be a star is about 80 times the mass of Jupiter. I just want to know what the source of this misconception is (the misconception being that two planets can merge to become a star).

There is the (rather shaky) premise from the movie '2010' (the sequel to '2001: A Space Odyssey') that the planet's mass could be condensed enough that it would undergo stellar ignition. That was done by replication of the Von Neumann machines, though, and not by planetary collision.

I can't think of any others off the top of my head.

I don't recognize the story myself. If two giant gas planets, size of Jupiter and larger were to collide square on, they might generate a thermal explosion that would be similar to a very short lived star. I don't think it is possible or likely.

On the other hand, in Space Odyssey 2010, the Monolith does spawn a massive number of monoliths that descend onto Jupiter, turning it into a second Sun to provide heat and light for Europa, I think it was. Not quite what you had in mind but it is from a movie.

I believe it comes from Star Trek. One of the references is in Next Generation found here under Act One http://en.memory-alpha.org/wiki/Ship_in_a_Bottle_(...

    Well sounds possible.

If those planets are Gas giants like Jupiter or bigger, mostly from Hydrogen then why not. But I have no idea where did you seen this.

I am pretty sure that no one will recite your past reference.

Well, I'm guessing this is from space somewhere.

    yes its wrong

but as my atmo repulsion theory planets formed by stars

    let me say shortly here

proton and electron attracting and repulsing to same distance , (eg see the hydrogen), this is a power existed on atoms ,but this power not equal at all kinds of atom of elements,

all body made by atom, all body is not equal distance and size in the universe ,, so if all body attracting without repulsion ,it cause to be all body move to central of universe,

see the theory i named atmo repulsion, for this theory

    ATMO REPULSION ENERGY (THEORY)

    (Attraction,Repulsion and Motion of Elements)

Gases and liquid are made up of the atoms or molecules having repulsion and attraction characters. The ability of substance’ repulsion, attraction and motion can be called atmo repulsion energy.

The substances having repulsive and attractive power if they enter one to another, In circumstance they are not mixed together, they will get exact sphere shape one inside other, according to the more atmo repulsive power substances outside (less atomic weight) and more atmo repulsive power substance(more atomic weight) inside around one another. At the same time a pressure also developed. The pressure around sphere also increased depending of the substance atmo repulsion increased and vice verse. If a molecules which enter in to the sphere which already developed through the atmo repulsion or attraction, which expel outside or attract to inside depending on the repulsion and attraction characters of the substance exist.

Being the sphere produced in and inside the substance one outside the other where if a substance is entering, having less atmo repulsion they move towards the center can tell ENDO-ATMO REPULSION MOVEMENT. Where there molecules moving outside the sphere having more atmo repulsive power, can tell EXO-ATMO REPULSION MOVEMENT.

The outer surface of earth consist different layers of gases individually and combined. Any substance such as gases liquid molecules or any other material enter or produced inside itself the atmosphere, where a movement is produced due to the Exo and Endo atmo repulsion, eventually the substance moves towards the center of the earth

(Ento-atmo repulsion) being high molecular weight(less atmo repulsion enrgy), where there the motion of the substance towards the outside (Exo-atmo repulsion) where molecular weight is less (high atmo repulsion energy)

    Experiment 1

We pour little high viscous liquid (eg, oil) in to a drinking glass of water, where the oil drops moves towards the center and stay there occupying an exact sphere shape. Again pour a different liquid other than oil having less viscous than that of oil (eg. Kerosene). The substance will move towards the outside of more viscous one. If trying with a solid particle which will move towards the center of system. Here where the molecules moving towards the center is called endo-atmo repulsion movement and the substances moves towards outside is called exo-atmo repulsion movement.

(you can identify the process Endo and Exo-Atmo Repulsion movement by using the following substances also.(water ,petrol, diesel, kerosene, coconut oil or other oil) so, the result will be common with all elements.

i can prove this theory with experimental evidence
