I'm looking at buying a house but it needs double glazing installed and I would like to know roughly how much it will cost. There are 8 windows that would need putting in and some patio doors installed..?

There are so many variables that it would be wise to get quotes from several reputable firms. The size of the windows and doors, the finish (Hardwood,uPVC and wood grained uPVC.The number and position of any opening windows, the finish of the patio doors in addition to the above these can have brushed or white aluminium finish.
Should the windows be a non standard size, requiring to be made to order, this would affect the price.
Ease of access is also a factor.

As the others have said, there are so many variables with regards to the exact specification, material, glazing (i.e. C-Rated, A-Rated, Triple Glazed etc) that it's virtually impossible to give even a rough idea on cost. - Although there seem to be a few sites online that claim to deliver a quote simply by filling out a few online questions. - I'd be a bit dubious about this though as this sort of product really requires a proper survey to establish exactly what your requirements are. - It might be worth taking a look online though to gauge a ball-park figure.
I believe that Which! did a survey of homeowners to try and establish an 'average' cost for double glazing as there aren't any published industry guidelines. Either way, at some point you'll need to have the actual installer to your property to take a look and provide a detailed quote, I'd always recommend getting at least two quotes, preferably three to ensure that you're getting a fair price and not overly inflated 'only for today' offers.
Lastly, recommendations are always valuable with big ticket items like double glazing, it might be worth looking at a website that recommends local traders (such as checkatrade.co.uk or trustatradesman (?))

I had some double glazing installed just before Christmas:
7 windows (which includes 3 for a bay window) cost me about £2500. Nowadays, you have to have upstairs windows with bottom openings, so mine open top and bottom which is a little more expensive. Only the centre of the bay window opens. About 5 years ago I had two back doors fitted - all glass, one with a small window above (non-opening). That cost £1400, so I would guess that you are looking at around £5,000 - £6,000. This was from a local FENSA registered firm in my area. If you opt for one of the big firms, treble that! When I got a quote for the two doors, their starting point was £5,000. Local firms are more likely to be more honest with their pricing and when something needs fixing, they are much easier to get hold of (doors tend to drop a bit and need adjusting).
You could try contacting a local firm, explain that you want a ballpark figure and see if they will give you a vague estimation.
EDIT
I went for the cheap white UPVC. My local firm makes them and fits them.

Let's start with $200 per window, more or less. I recommend leaving the patio doors alone initially.
Put sun-filtering coating on windows facing west that are not covered by a porch. We live in Texas.
Source(s): Replaced all of the windows in the house, none of the doors with triple-glazed double-hung vinyl frames. Vinyl window sash is much wider than aluminum, so some short sliders were replaced with fixed glass. Five windows which face onto a deep porch were left clear but the other 15 received a low-e coating. The glass doors were already double-glazed and had not fogged-over due to leakage. - How do you think about the answers? You can sign in to vote the answer.

We need more info,
How many openers
What colour
Are any requiring toughened glass
How big
Do they need 150mm cills or face drain
What trim do they need
Any plastering to do
Do you need lintels
Lots to think about.
