How underrated is Tommy Gibbons?

The man fought 106 recorded fights between 1911-1925, losing only five, including no decisions. He beat many of his days top fighters from middleweight to heavyweight, was the only man to take Jack Dempsey 15 rounds in a title match and was only stopped once, in his last fight.

He had power, skill and was tough but when we talk about great boxers who never won a title he rarely gets mentioned.

What is your opinion of Gibbons and why is he so underrated?

Hello sir and excellent question! Tommy Gibbons is one of the best to never have won a World Title in his career losing to Dempsey for the heavyweight Championship. He was a very clever and fast boxer with above average power and fought some of the very best during his marvelous career. His brother Mike was also an excellent boxer as a middleweight and is also a Hall of Famer. Tommy was only knocked out once his his stellar carrer by the great Gene Tunney in his last career fight (106th) Here is a little rundown of his career:

    Tommy Gibbons

    Won; 95

    Lost: 5

    Draws: 5

    Kayo's: 48

Notable fighters that Gibbons beat were:

    Kid Norfolk

    Georges Carpentier

    Billy Miske

    Harry Greb

    George Chip

    Batling Levinsky

Gibbons was a great fighter as his record clearly shows and I feel he isn't really underrated but has been forgotten because of father time by younger generations who haven't taken the time to read about some of the past greats. Definitely one of the best to have never won a title.
