Brake problems. Got any advice?

While driving my '97 Ford Taurus, I noticed that I had to press my brakes almost to the floor to get it to stop. Checked the brake fluid and it was low, so I poured more in. The problem continued, so I checked the fluid again after a few days passed, and the master cylinder was still full.

I took off both of my front tires and checked the calipers, they seemed alright. The pads are almost brand new (replaced them about a month ago). I checked for leaks, there weren't any. I'm stumped. Unless I hit the brake pedal quickly, my foot has to go almost to the floor. When I hit the brake quickly, the brakes work like they normally should (I don't have to press as far).

Any ideas what could be wrong with the brakes, and what happened to the missing fluid?

If your brake fluid is lowering in the resv, this indicates a minor leak, either in a brake shoe wheel cylinder through its bore seal or a slightly open bleeder valve on one of the calipers. In time, when your checking for leaks, it may have already have dried, giving you a false indication. Also a leak from the master cylinder piston into the power booster will cause these very same problems.

Also to everyone out here, air in the brake system causes a brake pedal to go to the floor.

I'm thinking you have an issue with air in the lines and your brakes need to be bled.

Second issue, if that doesn't do it is a master cylinder is going bad.

Take it to a brake shop and have the system checked out. This is a serious safety issue.

First the missing fluid, you have a leak. Why did you only pull the front wheels? From the way you describe the action of the pedal it sounds to me like the master cylinder is bad, I don't think bleeding the system will do any good and you will need to do that when you fix the leak. And don't wait a couple of days to do this do it now.

did you check the back brakes ? sounds like the master cylinder is by-passing ! if you did not replace anything like a caliper, wheel cylinder, master cylinder, a brake line or hose then there would be no air in the system ! sounds a lot like the master cylinder !
