What is the best zipfile utility for compressing photos for storage?

I take a lot of photos and want to save them to a HDD locker drive, so I am looking for a good zipfile utility program, that is easy to use, compatable with Windows7 64bit OS and does the job! Any suggestions?

To archive generic files, the best free choice is 7-Zip [ http://www.7-zip.org/ ] (choosing LZMA2 compression method, Ultra mode setting). Keep in mind no generic compression program will usually be helpful at all when compressing data which is already compressed, such as MP3 audio files or JPEG images.

Considering your photos are most likely in JPEG format, you can use this tool (64 bit version available too) [ http://encode.ru/attachment.php?s=51be72a31cd3f326... ].

It's a command line program; in order to use it, you'll have to copy the jpegoptim64.exe to the folder(s) where you keep your images. After copying the .exe file, right click on an empty spot inside the folder while pressing the Shift key. Choose "Open command window here" from the menu [ http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/27778-open-co... ] and type this command in the command prompt window:

    jpegoptim64.exe *.jpg

Press Enter and let the program do the job.

win rar is the best though it asks for registration key after 40 day free trial.

a registration window pops up every time you use it but its not a major problem.
