I swear that drinking water makes my headache worse sometimes?

I get headaches for lots of reasons. Or at least it seems that way.

dehydration, due to too much coffee, not enough water. Could be stress or anxiety. Sometimes too much sun will do it, mind you I worked 3 years of landscaping, 10 hours a day in outside working, it never seemed to bother me.

Sometimes if I don't have a coffee early enough in the morning I'll get a headache. Then if I try to fix it in the afternoon by drinking a coffee it can make my headache terrible. I swear sometimes just the smell of coffee when I feel a headache coming on will give me instant pains to my head.

Then sometimes I think I'm dehydrated so I drink a bottle of water. It seems like my headache becomes twice as bad within a matter of 20 minutes. Maybe I drank water too late and the headache was bound to get worse anyways. But I swear it feels like the water is making it worse.

Sometimes I can have a couple glasses of red wine and i'm fine. Other times one sip and i'll get a migraine. This happens especially if I drink it early in the day, or if I have a minor headache already coming on.

So now I'm thinking its dietary or something. Maybe the water flushes some kind of important nutrient out of my system when I drink more of it. Could this be true or am I crazy?

Anybody got some ideas? I could go to a doctor but I know they're not gonna do anything about it. At most pain medications but that's not gonna help. Just wish I knew what was causing it so I wouldn't have to get headache's like this week, they've been off and on for the last 5 days now : /

There are so many things that cause headaches that this may be impossible to answer. I'll give you all of the most common causes. The triggers build up, so if you have more than one of these problems, it only takes a little of each.

For starters, absolutely no alcohol. It strips vitamins from the body, especially vitamin B. After awhile it will lead to a perpetual headache that will not go away as long as you still drink. For heavy drinkers, it can take months to fix the problems it causes. This is not an exaggeration. (Three guesses how I know this...)

The top cause right now is allergies. Literally everything is pollinating right now. The pain is usually behind the forehead, eyes and cheeks, and the area can become so painful that even touching the area will hurt. Take benadryl to prevent the allergies and sudafed to clear up the congestion. Halls cough drops help too because of the menthol. They're basically just sugar and menthol so you can eat as many of those as you want. Change out all of your air filters to high quality ones designed for pollen, mold and dander. Clean your house top to bottom, taking care to dust electronics frequently since they're dust magnets. Wash your bedding and all of your clothes with a perfume free detergent. Absolutely NO dryer sheets. Try to occasionally dry vac or shampoo your carpet. If you have indoor pets, either put them outside or at least keep them out of your room.

Dehydration is also a top cause of headaches. It's a much bigger problem during summer. Drink tons of water and sports drinks like gatorade and powerade. Some juice and kool-aid are fine. For now, absolutely no soda, coffee, energy drinks or alcohol.

Avoid artificial sugars. A lot of people get headaches or even migraines from them. Nutrasweet (aspartame) is the worst. Sweet'n Low (saccharin) and Splenda (sucralose) aren't as bad, but some people still react badly to them. Truvia is new on the market, but headaches are currently the top complaint.

Avoid MSG. It can cause headaches or migraines depending on a person's level of sensitivity. It's present in tons of things under almost a dozen different names, including "natural flavors". The only way to avoid it is if the label says "no MSG" or if you're eating fresh meat and produce.

If you've ever been diagnosed with migraines, avoid large amounts of vitamin C and NEVER touch a vitamin C supplement. Grapes and wine are notoriously bad about causing headaches and migraines, especially red grapes and red wine. Some people can get a migraine from as few as half a dozen red grapes.

Certain vitamin deficiencies can cause headaches (and tons of other problems). Since very few people get everything they need from what they eat, it may be a good idea to take supplements. Be sure to take them after a large meal. This will prevent them from upsetting your stomach or causing a headache. Drink tons of water so they don't stress your kidneys or cause mild dehydration. This will take quite a while to show results, so don't rule it out as a possibility if you don't see immediate improvement. Even if this isn't the problem, it's still good for you and will keep you healthier overall.

You're correct that stress can cause headaches. There are a lot of ways to relieve stress. Aerobic exercise (running, biking, etc.) works well for some people. Don't even try to lift weights because that plays havoc with blood pressure and it might cause a headache or make one worse. Find something you like to do and spend at least a little time doing it every day. Music, television, video games, playing pranks on unsuspecting friends and family members... go nuts. It doesn't matter what it is as long as you enjoy it. If you do end up on medication, I recommend valium. It's effective and since it's been around for a long time, it's cheap and all possible side effects and drug interactions have been documented. Newer medications are more expensive and have some nasty surprises that haven't been documented yet.

Sleep deprivation is another huge problem. Like stress, that can be linked to dozens of different symptoms. If possible, rearrange your schedule to get at least another hour of sleep a night for the next week or so and see if that helps. If so, you may have to adopt that new schedule.

Get your eyes checked. If you need glasses or your prescription needs to be changed, that's pretty much a guaranteed headache almost every day. Astigmatisms are especially bad about this.

Diabetes can begin at any age, even without a family history. Headaches, body aches, fatigue and the urge to constantly drink water or pee are some of the first symptoms. This is a long shot, but I'm trying to be thorough.

I'm sorry I couldn't narrow it down to a definitive answer. Good luck.
