how to kill apps on my android phone when i'm not using them?

I have a xperia, i want to kill some apps automatically when i'm not using them. For example i rarely use google maps and it's running all the time, every i have to go to settings and force stop it. I do that all the time, is there a way to kill it automatically if i'm not using it? I don't want apps running in the background

Update:

you can download an app called "advanced Task Killer" and set it up to kill apps every 30 minutes. This will also give you extended battery life.
